  71. Brazil occupies nearly half of the total area of South America. It has borders
  72. with all the South American countries except for Chile and Ecuador.  Its land
  73. mass totals approximately 3,300,000 square miles, more than the continental
  74. United States and slightly less than all the European countries together.  
  75. 40% of the Brazilian land is occupied by the Amazon Rain Forest.

  77. Brazil covers almost half of the South American continent and it is bordered to
  78. the north, west and south by all South American countries except Chile and
  79. Ecuador; to the east is the Atlantic. Brazil is topographically relatively
  80. flat, and at no point do the highlands exceed 3000m (10,000ft). Over 60% of the
  81. country is a plateau; the remainder consists of plains. The River Plate Basin
  82. (the confluence of the Parana and Uruguay Rivers, both of which have their
  83. sources in Brazil) in the far south is more varied, higher and less heavily
  84. forested. North of the Amazon are the Guiana Highlands, partly forested, partly
  85. stony desert. The Brazilian Highlands of the interior, between the Amazon and
  86. the rivers of the south, form a vast tableland, the Mato Grosso, from which
  87. rise mountains in the southwest, that form a steep protective barrier from the
  88. coast called the Great Escarpment, breached by deeply cut river beds. The
  89. population is concentrated in the southeastern states of Minas Gerais, Sao
  90. Paulo and Parana. Sao Paulo has a population of over 10 million, while over 5
  91. million people live in Rio de Janeiro.

  282. systems are state-owned. Full IDD services available for the whole country and
  283. abroad. Country code: 55. Public telephones require metal discs called
  284. 'fichas', which can be obtained from cash desks or newspaper kiosks. All calls
  285. are liable to a 20% tax.  Fax: Facilities are available in the main post
  286. offices of major cities and some 5-star hotels; because this technology is only
  287. just being introduced it is advisable to check that this facility is offered at
  288. your destination. Telex/telegram: International telegram and telex facilities
  289. exist in many cities. Offices of Embratel in Rio de Janerio (Praca Maua 7) and
  290. Sao Paulo. Rio's airport provides 24 hour telecommunication services. The
  291. domestic telex service now covers the whole of the country. Post: Services are
  292. reasonably reliable. Sending mail registered or franked will eliminate the risk
  293. of having the stamps steamed off. Airmail service to Europe takes four to six days. Surface mail takes at least four weeks. Press: The
  294. only English newspaper is The Brazil Herald in Rio. Also in Rio there is an
  295. English Language publication, the Rio Visitor which gives tourist information.

  314. distribution difficulties in such a large country there are no national
  315. dailies. However, numerous regional papers are published. Main US and European
  316. newspapers available in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Brazil Herald
  317. (circulation 18,000) incorporating Daily Post is only local English language
  318. daily. Main papers are O Dia (261,653), Jornal do Brasil (170,151), O Globo
  319. (266,569) and Jornal do Comercio (in Rio de Janeiro, 31,000) and O Estado de

  497. Argentina antes de venir), y hay mucho Sida en Paris y Niza (el
  498. recordado Jorge Donn fallecio de eso).  Si necesita preservativos, los
  499. encontrara en maquinas automaticas en el exterior de las farmacias,
  500. estaciones de trenes, y hasta en los toilettes de caballeros de varios
  501. bares y restaurantes.  Los franceses en general los compran en los
  502. supermercados, porque sale mas barato.  (Y las cajeras los marcan con
  503. la misma indiferencia que una pizza surgelo)
  504.

  506. P: Donde dormir barato ?
  507.  
  508. R: Hay hoteles de una cadena llamada "Formule 1".  En sus piezas hay
  509. capacidad para tres personas, y cuesta 130 francos por noche (mismo
  510. precio para 1,2 o 3).

  512. CONSEJO : No deje nada en el parking, le pueden robar.

  515. P: Cuanto vale un dolar ?
  516.  
  517. R: Entre 5 y 6 francos.  Use 5,5 para calculos con menos de un 10% de
  518. error, y use 5 para sus compras.

  521. P: Donde me conviene cargar nafta ? Quo nafta cargo ? La comun no existe ?

  523. R: Todos compran en el supermercado, es de 0,40 a 0,50 francos mas
  524. barato.  Si su auto es chiquito (un Fiat Panda, un Clio 1.1) cargue
  525. Super (usualmente, mangueras azules).  Cualquier otro auto europeo
  526. aguanta la Sans Plomb 98 (manguera verde).  Si su auto tiene mas de 2
  527. litros y es naftero, puede usar Sans Plomb 95 (verde aussi).  Las
  528. Diesel usan mangueras negras.

  531. P: Silencio en la noche, ya todo esta en calma. Como mierda hago para
  532. encontrar nafta ?
  533.  
  534. R: Si la estacion de servicio dice "24/24", quiere decir que tiene un
  535. expendedor automatico de nafta que funciona a tarjeta de credito.  Y
  536. no se dice "mierda", guarango...
  537.  
  538. En autopista, hay una estacion de servicio cada 30 km.
  539.  
  540.  
  541. P: Tengo que pagar para verificar las gomas ?
  542.  
  543. R: No.  La ley francesa estipula que es un servicio obligatorio y
  544. gratuito de toda estacion de servicio.
  545.  
  546.  
  547. P: Tengo placa extranjera.  Van a ser mas tolerantes con los
  548. estacionamientos prohibidos y con las infracciones de transito ?
  549.  
  550. R: No.  Hay informes de gente que, por ser extranjeros, los
  551. inspectores se ensa~naron mas y que los amenazaron con hacer venir la
  552. policia.  Y no bromean. 
  553.  
  554. Sobre todo, respete las prioridades.  El STOP le obliga a detenerse
  555. (velocidad cero) delante la raya continua.  El "Cedez le passage"
  556. exige que el que tiene una raya punteada delante suyo deje pasar a
  557. todo el mundo, asi tarde una hora.  Y si no hay nada, se aplica la
  558. regla del que viene por la derecha pasa primero.  Los franceses mas o
  559. menos la respetan (siempre hay un animalito, pero enfin...), asi que
  560. en caso de accidente es lo primero en que se fijan.
  561.  
  562. No atraviese una raya continua.  Acaba de salir una ley en la cual eso
  563. esta considerado ya no como "infraccion de transito" sino como
  564. "delito" (de poner a otros en peligro). 
  565.  
  566. No se haga el vivo, deje pasar a los taxis (usualmente conducidos por
  567. aguerridos portugueses), y mire bien los semaforos, que son muy
  568. "aguados" y no se ven bien.  Si lo cazan, no hay tutia.
  569.  
  570. En general, trate a todos con respeto, y si el molinete del Metro le
  571. trago el boleto, expliquele al empleado con una sonrisa lo que paso, y
  572. pidale ayuda en vez de repetir los insultos que aprendio en la
  573. Bombonera.  Al menos, conmigo funciona :-)

  576. P: Adonde morfar barato ?
  577.  
  578. R: Los MacDonalds son muy limpios, y calidad estandard.  Los chicos
  579. adoran eso, y si esta con criaturas, apreciara el ratito de descanso
  580. que le proporcionan el area de juego para sus querubines.
  581.  
  582. Sino, pruebe un Pizza Hut o una cafeteria Flunch.  A veces salen
  583. ofertas y la guarnicion (arroz o fideos) lo sirven en canilla libre,
  584. ideal para reparar con un pollo y arroz por menos de 30 francos (5
  585. dolares) las energias gastadas en encontrar a la Gioconda.  En
  586. general, las cafeterias-restaurant de los Centros Comerciales son
  587. accesibles.  Las de los museos son caras.
  588.  
  589. Muchos restaurantes o bistrots tienen un menu del dia, bastante
  590. pasable pero con porciones chicas para los estandares argentinos.
  591.  
  592. Por lo general, les conviene ir a un supermercado y llenar la mochila
  593. con latitas y sandwiches (croque Monsieur) ya listos. 
  594.  
  595.  
  596. P: Yo vivo en un pais de la Union Europea Necesito seguro medico ?
  597.  
  598. R: Seguro medico no.  Solo lleve un formulario de la Seguridad Social
  599. de su pais atestiguando que esta cubierto por ella.  Explique que es
  600. para viajar a Francia.
  601.  
  602. En cambio, sigue siendo recomendable una asistencia al viajero para
  603. recuperacion de equipaje, repatriacion por accidente, interprete en
  604. caso de problemas, etc.
  605.  
  606. Conozco un frances que se fue unos meses a laburar a Nueremberg, y que
  607. se va a Estrasburgo una vez por mes, porque los dentistas franceses
  608. estan mejor "reintegrados" que los alemanes...
  609.  
  610.  
  611. P: Como llevar dinero ?
  612.  
  613. R: Las mejores tarjetas de credito son (de lejos) Visa y Master Card. 
  614. Con ellas podra retirar dinero frances en cualquier cajero automatico
  615. que tenga el logo de su tarjeta, y pagar la nafta, los pa~nales de la
  616. nena, o el pasaje de regreso a Buenos Aires.
  617.  
  618. El unico problema es que aca las tarjetas de credito tienen un "chip"
  619. como las de telefono, del cual se lee el codigo secreto de cuatro
  620. cifras.  Eso puede presentar problemas con una tarjeta extranjera.  Un
  621. sistema frances llamado Carte Bleue le permite pagar con una tarjeta
  622. VISA o Master Card internacional.
  623.  
  624. Los cheques de viajero se aceptan en los bancos y casas de cambio.
  625.  
  626. No se le ocurra presentar un EuroCheque, la mayoria de los nativos los
  627. desconocen.
  628.  
  629. Pocos negocios aceptan las American Express, y ademas estan muy mal
  630. vistas porque no quieren pertenecer al sistema de tarjetas de credito
  631. frances, Carte Bleue.  No pertenecer tambien tiene sus privilegios,
  632. vio ?

  635. P:  Como ir vestidos ?
  636.  
  637. R: Aun en verano, tal vez necesite un abrigo livianito a la ma~nana.  A
  638. mediodia no sabra que hacer con el.  En invierno abriguese como para
  639. ir a Bariloche.  Los medios de transporte usualmente tienen una
  640. calefaccion de sauna.
  641.  
  642. CONSEJO : Empilchen bien.  SI Ud.  se dirige a un nativo en idioma
  643. extranjero y para peor con pinta de pordiosero, musitara algo como
  644. "DEZOLE', SCHKONEPA'..." y huira espantado porque lo tomo por un
  645. refugiado, o aun peor, con un inmigrante ilegal.  Si Ud.  es un
  646. turista, por favor demuestrelo.

  649. P: Puede pararme la policia y pedirme documentos ?

  651. R: Si.  Si Ud.  habia oido decir que no, GUARDA.  Eso ya no corre mas,
  652. a partir de 1994 la policia tiene derecho a pedirle documentos a
  653. cualquiera.  Lleve siempre los suyos encima.

  656. P:  Vale la pena ir a EuroDisney ?

  658. R: Bof...  Si tiene la guita para venir a Paris, vaya al de verdad que
  659. esta en Orlando, no le parece ?  Aproveche sino para ver el Parc
  660. Asterix, que es mas barato, telurico, y ademas es mas simpatico.

  663. P: Es cierto que eso de "La Bandera Argentina, Dios sea loado, no ha
  664. sido atada jamas al carro triunfal de ningun vencedor de la tierrra"

  667. R: Si.  En la iglesia de San Luis, en el Museo de Guerra de los
  668. Invalidos, hay dos banderas argentinas tomadas en el combate de Vuelta
  669. de Obligado.

  674. R: Calma, radicales...  Se consigue un sucedaneo en la Ferme de Gally,

  845. Articulo 1:    La Universidad de Buenos Aires otorgara becas destinadas a jo-
  846. venes graduados universitarios  que  acrediten haber desarrollado actividades
  847. de formacion en centros  de  investigacion en el extranjero.  Para acceder al
  848. beneficio deberan manifestar interes por  reincorporarse  a las tareas de in-
  849. vestigacion y docencia de esta Universidad.    Las becas se denominaran Becas
  850. de Reincorporacion a las actividades Cientificas y  Tecnologicas  de  la Uni-
  851. versidad de Buenos Aires.
  852.  
  853. Articulo 2:  El Consejo superior determinara anulmente  el numero de Becas de
  854. Reincorporacion a otorgar, y al proponer la apertura del  concurso  respecti-
  855. vo, la asignacion que correspondera a tal efecto.  La  fecha  y  el  plazo de
  856. inscripcion al concurso sera especificado en cada llamado. 
  857.  
  858. Articulo 3:   Podran  ser  aspirantes a beca de reincorporacion los grduados,
  859. docentes o investigadores de  la  Universidad  de Buenos Aires o graduados de
  860. otras Universidades Nacionales que hayan  realizado tareas de interes para la
  861. Universidad de Buenos Aires, que reunan los siguientes requisitos:
  862.  
  863. Residir en el extranjero y haber  realizado  actividades de formacion en cen-
  864. tros de investigacion y de posgrados de conocido nivel, durante un periodo no
  865. inferior  a (1) a#o y no superior a  (5)  a#os.    Seran  excluidos  aquellos
  866. investigadores  formados que retornen al pais luego de una  permanencia  pro-
  867. longada  (mas de cinco a#os) en el exterior o aquellos  que,  teniendo  resi-
  868. dencia permanente en un pais extranjero, decidan regresar al pais, excepto en
  869. casos justificados, a criterio del Consejo Superior.
  870.  
  871. Haber obtenido durante su estadia fuera del pais o antes de iniciar  sus  ac-
  872. tividades de  formacion  en  el  exterior,  el titulo universitario maximo en
  873. alguna rama o  disciplina  cientifica,  excepto  en casos justificados a cri-
  874. terio del Consejo Superior.
  875.  
  876. Presentar al Comite de  Evaluacion  la  informacion y la documentacion que se
  877. detalla en el articulo 4.
  878.  
  879. Articulo 4:  Los aspirantes  deberan  presentar  a la secretaria de Ciencia y
  880. Tecnica de la Universidad de Buenos  Aires,  junto con la solicitud de beca y
  881. el formulario que debe contener la siguiente informacion y documentacion:
  882.  
  883. Datos personales y curriculum vitae.
  884. Disciplina cientifica.
  885. Periodo de permanencia en el extanjero.
  886. Rendimiento cientifico en el extanjero.
  887. Informe del Centro de investigacion del extranjero donde realizo sus
  888. actividades de formacion.  Programa de trabajo de la investigacion que
  889. realizara en su reincorporacion en la Universidad de Buenos Aires. 
  890. Carta de aceptacion del responsable de la Unidad Academica donde
  891. realizara dicho programa.  Nombre de tres (3) personas de reconocida
  892. trayectoria en la disciplina a quienes requerir referencias. 
  893. Compromiso de realizar actividades docentes y de formacion de recursos
  894. humanos.
  895.  
  896. Articulo 5:  La adjudicacion de las becas se hara por  concurso sobre la base
  897. de la informacion detallada en el articulo 4.  A igualdad de  merito, tendran
  898. prioridad los graduados,  docentes  e  investigadores  de  la  Universidad de
  899. Buenos Aires.
  900.  
  901. Articulo 6:  Las  becas  de reincorporacion tendran una duracion de doce (12)
  902. meses y podran ser prorrogadas  por  un  periodo de igual duracion solo en el
  903. caso que ello resulte justificado.   La solicitud de prorroga debera ser pre-
  904. sentada a la opinion del responsable de  la  Unidad Academica en donde el be-
  905. cario lleva a cabo sus actividades, no mas  alla  de  transcuridos  las  tres
  906. cuartas (3/4) partes de duracion de la misma, con  un  informe parcial de las
  907. tareas desarrolladas.
  908.  
  909. Articulo 7:  Son obligaciones del becario:  desarrollar las  tareas indicadas
  910. en el Plan de Trabajo presentado en la solicitud, bajo el  regimen  de  dedi-
  911. cacion  exclusiva  (cuarenta y cinco horas semanales).  La beca es incompati-
  912. ble con  cualquier  otra  actividad rentada, con la unica excepcion de que el
  913. postulante tenga un  (1)  cargo  docente de dedicacion simple en esta Univer-
  914. sidad.  El becario  estara ademas obligado a reincorporarse como docente a la
  915. Universidad de Buenos Aires si  esta  asi  se  lo requiriese al termino de la
  916. beca, realizandose a tal efecto el  mecanismo  puesto  en  el Programa de In-
  917. corporacion a la Docencia.

  919. Articulo 8:  El estipendio de un  Becario  de Reincorporacion sera el corres-
  920. pondiente al de un Becario de perfeccionamiento de  la  Universidad de Buenos
  921. Aires.

  999. encarga de America Latina.  Sin embargo, esta persona no sabia mucho

  1004. transcribo la descripcion del Programa de Retorno de Personal
  1005. Calificado Latinoamericano.  Antes que se endulcen: justamente en
  1006. estos momentos se esta debatiendo en la OIM la continuacion o no de
  1007. este programa.  A mi no han podido darme una respuesta concreta aun (y
  1008. yo regreso en menos de dos meses!).
  1009.  
  1010. ASISTENCIA DE LA OIM EN EL RETORNO DE PERSONAL CALIFICADO
  1011. LATINOAMERICANO
  1012.  
  1013. A peticion de los gobiernos latinoamericanos miembros, la Organizacion
  1014. Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM), desarrolla un programa con
  1015. el proposito de asistir en el retorno de profesionales, tecnicos y
  1016. profesional especializado latinoamericano que se encuentra en el
  1017. extranjero y cuyos sevicios se requieren en sus paises de origen, o en
  1018. otros de America Latina y, de esta forma, transferir el conocimiento
  1019. tecnico y la experiencia adquirida en el exterior.
  1020.  
  1021. Asistencia en colocacion, traslado e integracion
  1022. ------------------------------------------------
  1023.  
  1024. La OIM ofrece asistencia al cadidato y su familia con orientacion
  1025. general, gestiones de colocacion y en el traslado e intregracion. 
  1026. Estos servicios incluyen:
  1027.  
  1028. - Ayuda en las gestiones de busqueda de un empleo en el pais de
  1029. destino segun la especialidad y la experiencia del candidato.  No
  1030. obstante, el programa tambien es aplicable a los profesionales que
  1031. hayan encontrado una colocacion gracias a sus propias gestiones;
  1032.  
  1033. - Informacion acerca de la situacion laboral, costo de vida y
  1034. disposiciones aduaneras del pais de destino; - Ayuda en el viaje de
  1035. retorno por medio de tarifas aereas reducidas para el candidato y
  1036. familia;
  1037.  
  1038. - Seguro medico y de accidentes (optativo) en condiciones ventajosas;
  1039.  
  1040. Para poder obtener la reduccion de tarifas, la reserva de pasajes debe
  1041. ser hecha por nuestra oficina.  El interesado tambien tiene la
  1042. posibilidad de hacer viajar a su familia antes o despues de la fecha
  1043. de su propio viaje.

  1045. Pasajes a costo reducido
  1046. ------------------------
  1047.  
  1048. El costo es indicado al candidato oportunamente -o a la entidad
  1049. contratante, segun sea el caso- y debe ser cancelado a nuestra oficina
  1050. antes del viaje.  Normalmente los pasajes que se obienen bajo el
  1051. programa disftrutan de una reduccion sobre las tarifas oficiales
  1052. fijadas por la I.A.T.A.  (Asociacion Internacional para la
  1053. Tarificacion Aerea) a la fecha del viaje.
  1054.  
  1055. La gente de Bonn me contesto en menos de una semana. Esta es la
  1056. informacion relevante de la carta: 
  1057.  
  1058. "Im Rahmen unseres RETURN OF TALENT PROGRAMMES koennen wir
  1059. lateinamerikanischen Stipendiaten reduzierte Flugtarife anbieten,
  1060. sofern sie ihr Studium in der BRD absolviert haben." (les quedo claro?)

  1062. Lo que sigue es la experiencia personal de Silvina Smith:
  1063.  
  1064. Inicien el tramite al menos SEIS meses antes de la partida, pues el
  1065. asunto se puede tornar muy burocratico.  Aca en Europa se manejan
  1066. mucho con cartas y eso fue lo que yo intente inicialmente, pero al
  1067. cabo de dos meses aun no tenia respuesta (salvo de Alemania).  Creo
  1068. que lo mejor es llamar por telefono a la Sra.  Dafflon.  Ella te envia
  1069. todos los formularios que hay que llenar para que te consideren como
  1070. posible candidato.  Algunos paises, como Alemania, parecen estar bien
  1071. organizados y ser capaces de realizar los tramites ellos mismos. 
  1072. Otros, como Austia, son la burocracia personificada y no tienen idea
  1073. de nada.  Por las dudas no se arriesguen y vayan a lo seguro.  SUERTE!

  1075. OFERTA DE LA OIM
  1076. ================
  1077.  
  1078. Al fin recibi una oferta de la OIM.  La mando a la red para que tengan
  1079. una idea del estado en que se encuentra el programa de retorno de
  1080. talentos.  Nuevamente se trata de informacion para quienes esten en
  1081. Europa.
  1082.

  1086. 1570 u$s (el pasaje da derecho a 30 kilos de equipaje) tasa por los

  1095. tramo Viena/Amsterdam/BsAs por KLM (tramo y calidad de la linea
  1096. comparables a las anteriores): 725 u$s Con el resto pago mucho mas de
  1097. 10 kilos extra y con la tasa por servicios prestados me sobra para
  1098. comprar BsAs/Cba!.

  1100. Otras lineas (Aerolineas, Iberia, Varig) cuestan alrededor de 750 u$s
  1101. para el tramo Frankfurt/BsAs.  Luftahnsa es la linea mas cara.  Un
  1102. pasaje de ida y vuelta Frankfurt/BsAs cuesta alrededor de 1350 u$s. 
  1103. Ida sola esta en los 1900 u$s.
  1104.  
  1105. Como ven, no se jugaron para nada con la "oferta" (ni siquiera tomando
  1106. como base el pasaje mas caro).  Probablemente la OIM tenga convenio
  1107. con distintas lineas en cada pais, asi que en una de esas los que no
  1108. estan en Alemania/Austria tienen un poco mas de suerte.

  1396.     conectados nodos que se comunican a baja velocidad a traves de
  1397.     lineas telefonicas caras de usar, es conveniente mantener los
  1398.     mensajes a esta listas muy breves.

  1400.         IMPORTANTE
  1401.         
  1402.         Es importante el uso moderado de esta lista. La gente asociada a
  1403.         la misma es mucha y de lugares remotos. Si se envian mensajes
  1404.         muy largos o de poca importancia se esta sobrecargando la red y,
  1405.         por otro lado, se esta perjudicando a aquellos que tengan acceso
  1406.         lento y costoso al servicio de correo electronico.

  1513. camisas de hombre el tama#o corresponde al perimetro del cuello.  Para
  1514. los pantalones de hombre, el numero es la mitad del perimetro de la
  1515. cintura (si este es 80, eu pantalon es Nro 40).  En los sombreros el
  1516. numero ingles podria ser el diametro en pulgadas, el numero europeo el
  1517. perimetro.  Para los chicos, comienzan con numeros asociados con la
  1518. edad (ropa para 1, 2, 3, 4, ...  a#os) y en algun momento "saltan" al

  1594. sistema (asi como un automovil puede convertirse a un barco). 
  1595. Conversiones de televisores de NTSC u otras normas PAL es algo que los
  1596. tecnicos argentinos hace anhos que lo dominan, ya por los 70's se
  1597. vendian las plaquetas de conversion, del SECAM no sabemos.  El costo
  1598. ronda los $150 en Buenos Aires.  Todo lo mismo se aplica para VCR's y
  1599. camcorders, aunque ahi la pericia de los tecnicos argentinos quiza no
  1600. sea tan solida.

  1790. America before travelling. TEPSA buses from Brazil connect through other

  1792. operates the 4300km (2700 mile) route from Rio to Santiago de Chile, and
  1793. Soletur operates other international routes from Rio. For further information
  1794. contact the Brazilian Tourist Office.  Documentation: International Driving
  1795. Permit required. This must be validated by Automovel Club de Brazil. Overland

  1806. NOTE: When travelling between cities on public transport, visitors must carry
  1807. passports, as proof of identity is required.

  1809. BUS: Inter-urban transport is very much road based (accounting for 97% of
  1810. travellers) compared with air (2.2%) and rail (less than 1%). High quality
  1811. coaches have been increasingly introduced on the main routes, which are well
  1812. served. Operators include:  Cometa, which operates between Sao Paulo and Belo
  1813. Horizonte; Penha (Sao Paulo-Porto Alegre); Reunidas (Sao Paulo- Aracatuba);
  1814. Motta (Sao Paulo-Campo Grande); Garcia (Sao Paulo-Londrina); Real-Expresso (Sao
  1815. Paulo-Rio-Brasilia); TransBrasiliana (Rio-Belem); Sulamericana (Curitiba-Foz do
  1816. Iguazu); and Expresso Brasileiro (Sao Paulo-Rio). Services connect all
  1817. inhabited parts of the country. Standards and time- tables vary, and the
  1818. visitor must be prepared for overnight stops and long waits between connecting
  1819. stages. Car hire: Available in all major centres. Traffic drives on the right.
  1820. Parking in cities is very difficult and it is best to avoid driving through the
  1821. often congested city areas if at all possible.

  1823. ROAD: Brazil has 1,400,000km (900,000 miles) of roads.
  1824. International driving licence required, which must be validated by Automovil
  1825. Club do Brasil. Traffic is often congested in main cities. Petrol is of poor
  1826. quality and expensive. Service stations are rare on some roads (e.g. Belo
  1827. Horizonte-Brasilia) and often closed on Sundays.  A foreign license is valid
  1828. for six months, although a certificate of validity must be obtained from the
  1829. Brazilian driving authorities.

  1831. AIR: There is a shuttle service between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, a regular
  1832. service from Sao Paulo to Brasilia, and a shuttle service from Brasilia to Belo
  1833. Horizonte. There are air services between all Brazilian cities, Brazil having
  1834. one of the largest internal air networks in the world. At weekends it is
  1835. advisable to book seats as the services are much used. Air taxis are available
  1836. between all major centres.  Advance booking not necessary for shuttle flights
  1837. between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo (about one hour). Main internal airlines
  1838. are Varig, Cruzeiro, Transbrasil and Vasp.

  1840. SEA/RIVER: Ferries serve all coastal ports. River transport is the most
  1841. efficient method for the Amazon delta.  Services on Sao Francisco River between
  1842. Juazeiro and Pirapora and up the Amazon to Manaus. Hydrofoil service between
  1843. Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi.

  1845. RAIL: State and privately owned railways operate limited services to most main
  1846. centres throughout country. Service is generally slower than bus and
  1847. long-distance travelling can be uncomfortable. Good sleeper services with
  1848. restaurant cars operate between Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.

  1850. URBAN: There are extensive bus services in all the main centres, often with
  1851. express 'executivo' at premium fares run by air- conditioned coaches. Rio and
  1852. Sao Paulo both have two-line metros and local rail lines, and there are
  1853. trolleybuses in Sao Paulo and a number of other cities. Trolleybuses are
  1854. increasingly being introduced as an energy-saving measure. Fares are generally
  1855. regulated with interchange possible between some bus and metro/rail lines, for
  1856. instance on the feeder bus linking the Rio metro with Copacabana. Taxis: In
  1857. most cities these are identified by red number plates, and are fitted with
  1858. meters. Willingness immediately to accept a taxi-driver's advice on where to go
  1859. or where to stay should be tempered by the knowledge that places to which he
  1860. takes a visitor are more than likely to give him a commission - and the highest
  1861. commissions will usually come from the most expensive places.

  1863. Metro: Two-line service in Rio de Janeiro. Line one goes from Botafogo Station
  1864. to Saenz Pena Station (Tijuca): (Mon-Sat) 0600 - 2300. Line two cuts across the
  1865. city's centre, from Estacio Station to the Maria de Graca Station: (Mon-Sat)
  1866. 0600 - 2000. Also two line network in Sao Paulo. Integrated bus/metro tickets
  1867. available.
  1868.  
  1869. Taxis: In Rio de Janeiro several types. So called 'common' taxi (yellow with
  1870. checkered stripe), radio taxi (white, with a red and yellow stripe). Mostly
  1871. metered and can be hailed. A 40 per cent surcharge operates between 2300 -
  1872. 0600, on Sundays and public holidays. Tipping optional.
  1873.  
  1874. HOTELS
  1875. Graded from one to five stars. Wide range available in main towns but sometimes
  1876. heavily booked (e.g. during Carnival) and advance booking advisable. Listings
  1877. available from local tourist offices.  Accommodation varies according to
  1878. region. First class accommodation is, by and large, restricted to the cities of
  1879. the south. The national hotel association is EMBRATUR.
  1880.  
  1881. CAMPING/CARAVANNING: Cars may be hired, and camping arranged on safari tours or
  1882. group 'exploration' trips in the Amazon region. The road network in Brazil is
  1883. good and is being expanded, but since many parts of Brazil are wild, or semi-
  1884. explored, it is wise to drive on main roads, to camp with organised groups
  1885. under supervision and with official permits, or otherwise to stay in recognised
  1886. hotels. The country is peaceful, but because it is so large there is a real
  1887. danger of getting lost, or being injured or killed by natural accident or lack
  1888. of local knowledge of survival.  Those with an 'international camper's card'
  1889. pay only half the rate of a non-member (about US$4 per person). The Camping
  1890. Club do Brasil has 43 sites in 13 states. For those on a low budget, service
  1891. stations can be used as camping sites. These are equipped with shower
  1892. facilities and can supply food.
  1893.  
  1894. FOOD & DRINK: Many regional variations which are very different from North
  1895. American and European food. One example is Bahian cookery, derived from days
  1896. when slaves had to cook scraps and anything that could be caught locally,
  1897. together with coconut milk and palm oil. Specialities include vatapa (shrimps,
  1898. fish oil and coconut milk, bread and rice), sarapatel (liver, heart, tomatoes,
  1899. peppers, onion and gravy), caruru (shrimps, okra, onions and peppers). From Rio
  1900. Grande do Sul comes churrasco (barbecued beef, tomato and onion sauce), galleto
  1901. al primo canto (pieces of cockerel cooked on the spit with white wine and oil).
  1902. From Amazon comes pato no tucupi (duck in rich wild green herb sauce), tacaca
  1903. thick yellow soup with shrimps and garlic). In the northeast dried salted meat
  1904. and beans are the staple diet. In Rio de Janeiro a favourite dish is feijoada
  1905. (thick stew of black beans, chunks of beef, pork, sausage, chops, pigs' ears
  1906. and tails on white rice, boiled green vegetables and orange slices). Types of
  1907. establishments vary. Table service is usual in most restaurants and cafes. If
  1908. resident in a hotel, drinks and meals can often be charged to account. Drink:
  1909. All kinds of alcoholic drink are manufactured and available and there are no
  1910. licensing hours or restrictions on drinking. Beer is particularly good and
  1911. draught beer is called chopp. Local liqueur is cachaca, local equivalent of
  1912. whisky popular with locals but not so much with visitors. Southern Brazilian
  1913. wine is of a high quality. Some bars have waiters and table service.
  1914.  
  1915. NIGHTLIFE: The best entertainment occurs in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. In
  1916. Rio the major clubs do not present their main acts until after midnight and the
  1917. daily paper gives current information; small clubs (boites) provide nightly
  1918. entertainment throughout the city. Sao Paulo nightlife is more sophisticated,
  1919. with greater choice; the shows tend to start earlier.
  1920.  
  1921. SHOPPING: In Rio and Sao Paulo major shops and markets stay open quite late in
  1922. the evening. Rio and Bahia specialise in antiques and jewellery. Special
  1923. purchases include: gems (particularly emeralds), jewellery (particularly
  1924. silver), souvenirs and permissible antiques, leather or snakeskin goods.
  1925. Fashions and antiques, crystal and pottery is a speciality of Sao Paulo. Belem,
  1926. the city of the Amazon valley, specialises in jungle items, but be careful that
  1927. you are not purchasing objects that have been plundered from the jungle,
  1928. contributing to the general destruction. Check for restrictions on import to
  1929. your home country of goods made from skins of protected species. Shopping
  1930. hours: 0900-1700 Monday to Friday; 0900-1230 Saturday. Most department stores
  1931. close at 2200. All the above times are subject to local variations and many
  1932. shops open until late in the evenings.
  1933.  
  1934. SPORT: Association football is the national obsession, the national team having
  1935. won the World Cup on four occasions. Ball games and athletics are also
  1936. popular. Capoeira, a martial art, was developed by black slaves in colonial
  1937. times disguised as a dance to an African musical rhythm. Mountain climbing,
  1938. hang- gliding and racing are popular, and safari trips are available to the
  1939. Mato Grosso or the Amazon jungle; big game hunting is, however, now illegal.
  1940. Waterskiing and underwater diving clubs exist all along the coastline. Both
  1941. deep sea and river fishing are available.
  1942.  
  1943. SPECIAL EVENTS: There are a number of lavish festivals throughout the year in
  1944. Brazil, the two most notable being Bahia's carnival just after Christmas (from
  1945. December to March) and the carnival in Rio de Janeiro (February), widely
  1946. regarded as the most spectacular and extravagant in the world. For details of

  1949. SOCIAL CONVENTIONS: Handshaking customary on meeting and taking one's leave,
  1950. and normal European courtesies are observed. Frequent offers of coffee and tea
  1951. are customary.
